The Brain and Body Donation Program (BBDP) is an autopsy-based, research-devoted brain bank, biobank and biospecimen bank that derives its human donors from the Arizona Study of Aging and Neurodegenerative Disease (AZSAND), a longitudinal clinicopathological study of the health and diseases of elderly volunteers living in Maricopa county and metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona. We study their function during life and their organs and tissue after death. To date, we have concentrated our studies on Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease and cancer. We also share the banked tissue, biomaterials and biospecimens with qualified researchers worldwide.

Affiliations and Sponsorship

National Brain and Tissue Resource for Parkinson’s Disease and Related Disorders

Sponsored by the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke, this program serves to stimulate brain and biospecimen research into the cause and cure of Lewy body disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. Researchers may access detailed clinical data and molecular-grade tissue.

Arizona Alzheimer’s Consortium

The AAC is sponsored by the National Institute on Aging (Arizona Alzheimer’s Disease Core Center) and the Arizona Department of Health and Human Services. The AAC conducts clinical and basic research as well as clinical trials devoted to developing better treatments for Alzheimer’s disease.

Arizona Parkinson’s Disease Consortium

The APDC is a collaboration between researchers located at the Arizona Mayo Clinic Arizona and Banner Sun Health Research Institute (BSHRI). The APDC, through its detailed study of normal elderly subjects as well as those with Parkinson’s disease, seeks to find more accurate and earlier diagnostic methods and predictive clinical features in order to facilitate earlier treatment of PD and prevention of PD-associated dementia.

Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research

The MJFF has provided major support to the BBDP and APDC since 2005, enabling expansion of its capabilities and accomplishments. Through MJFF support , the APDC has improved the classification of PD and other Lewy body disorders and has developed salivary gland biopsy into a potential new and accurate diagnostic method.

Sun Health Foundation

The Sun Health Foundation, through the generosity of the community, provides funding that improves the lives of people throughout the northwest Phoenix region. The Foundation has been the major non-governmental source of support to the BBDP. If you would like to support the BBDP, please contact the Sun Health Foundation.

National Cancer Institute

The BBDP has assisted with NCI initiatives into prostate, pancreatic and lung cancer. Tissue resources available for cancer researchers include cancer biospecimens from 48 different tumor types (see Tissue Request tab) as well as normal control tissue from all major organs.
